Arnaud wrote that the art of theatre is a process, ‘ the process which is impossible to finish, the endless process; the boundary is undone, it demands transgression to be brought to completion. Though, when the boundary is crossed, it breaks into pieces or when it is completed, the boundary appears again.’ The road leading into the unknown is always more important than the goal. That’s why, it is impossible to say what a new theatre will be soon or in a few years’ time ( the Nowy Theatre? – the word ‘nowy’ means ‘new’ in English ). It works in that way because a wanderer is still surprised observing what appears behind the horizon. The horizon which is constantly being crossed and constantly being moved away.
Both theatres shown at our mini-festival are marked with such a wandering experience. They ‘wander’ so vigorously that it arouses my true envy. In fact, the Maly Theatre from Vilnius is Rimas Tuminas’s own enterprise. Rimas Tuminas is an artistic director whose plays determine the repertoire. But the theatre established 22 years ago by Tuminas and his students from the actors’ faculty of the Vilnius Academy has undergone symptomatic transformations. The theatre has transformed in the same way as its creator who has gone beyond his limits to search for new sensations and new methods of expressing himself.
Katona Jozsef Shinkaz, the theatre from Budapest established in 1982 with the leadership of Gabor Zsambeki, manifests the process of change, transformation, transgression differently. Perhaps, this theatre is the most interesting repertoire theatre in Europe. It shows that new qualities may be looked for and revealing ways of expression may be created in such a – one could believe, torpid – convention. It is realizable thanks to the artists who Gabor Zsambeki asks to cooperate. They are either fulfilled, mature artists or carefully chosen novices and a younger generation of distinguished directors.
I am of the opinion that these two theatres: different, but open up to new experiences, will draw the audiences’ ( the ones from Lodz as well ) attention and lead us into the unknown which we will discover and get to know together.
Zbigniew Brzoza Let us meet!
We are very happy to know that the Meetings of the Theatres of Twin Cities turned out to be so interesting both for our viewers and for our dear guests. So in 2006 we are going to meet for the second time! In this year's edition we will be hosting the theatres from Serbia, Czech Republic, Israel and Ukraine to present their achievements. We will invite you for the exhibition of paints and graphics by Stasys Mostauskis from Lithuania. We will present the Theatre Music Night performed by the ensemble from Teschen and the concert of LStadt group whose songs are used in the play "Yotam". There will be conversations to the creators, the producers, the theatres managers and - above all - there will be the meetings .
